Laparoscopic Surgery
We are excited to announce that we now offer laparoscopy.
This technology is used
more often now in veterinary medicine. With laparoscopy a small camera and instruments
are passed into the abdomen or chest through two or three small, 1 cm incisions.
This allows us to biopsy certain organs, such as liver, pancreas, and intestine without
a more traditional, larger incision. Some surgical procedures, such as gastropexy,
ovariectomy, pericardial windows, etc. can also be done with the laparoscope. The
main advantages are a faster recovery time for the patient and more accurate diagnostic
ability. Minor surgical procedures can also be completed via the laparoscope.
Endoscopic Surgery
Flexible endoscopy allows us to see inside of the body without
making any surgical
incisions. A long, flexible tube with a camera
at one end is inserted into the area
of interest. Images are then
projected to a TV monitor. A biopsy channel in the scope
allows us
to insert instruments for a variety of procedures including cytology,
culture,
biopsy, and foreign body retrieval. With endoscopy, we can
often obtain a diagnosis
without the need for more invasive surgery.
Animals are often released the same day
and need little or no pain
medication. We are able to utilize our scope in the nose,
esophagus,
trachea and bronchi, stomach, small intestine, and colon.
